on-line poker question. would this be cheating, would this give an advantage?

osto11 asked:

here is the scenerio, 5 players on holdem table. playing for real money. each player has $1000. 4 of them are friends , are in same room, using 4 seperate computers. 4 friends are telling each other what cards they have. 1 player is just someone who happened to be playing. the 4 players agree to split evenly any money won from the single player. would the 4 players be considered to be cheating? would they have an advantage , other than the obvious 4-1 number.
i have never played for real money online because i was concerned that a group might be doing this to defraud me of my money. however, i am still not sure that it gives them them as great of an advantage as it appears.

Yes it’s cheating and I would consider it theft.

The reason that it IS cheating, is because the odd player, might think player B has a strong hand when he raises it, but actually it could be any of the players who has a good hand, and because they all see each others cards, they just work out which ones raise is more likely to be called and get that person to raise.
Also these players can see 8 hole cards which gives them a big advantage because they can know if the odd one player can have certain cards to make his hand. Eg if only an ace will stop one of the 4 winning, and between them they can see all aces, they know they got a winning hand, if alone they couldn`t work out this fact.
This is one of the reasons why I only play real cash poker in real life, not online.

Yup its called collusion. Its hard to do in the same room because the websites check IP addresses, so you couldnt all just share the same router. But you could be all on the phone together or Im’ing each other saying what you have

Are the friends talking and can they see each other’s cards? If so, it is definitely cheating. Otherwise, I am not sure. I certainly would not like to be the other guy at your table.

I would also mention that most poker rooms online have rules against collusion and they might assume that you are cheating, even if you are not, if four of you have the same, or very similar, IP addresses. This would almost certainly be the case if you are all on one network. The only way to avoid that would be to have multiple phone lines running into your place.

Party Poker has the most resources to combat this kind of thing and they have strong policies against collusion. If you are thinking of signing up, I would consider them. A full review of Party Poker can be found at The bonus code 25BUCKS4U will get you an extra $25 on your first deposit.
